CHAPTER NINE

“DAMN IT TO HELL and back, Dennis!” Cody snapped into the phone. Then he lowered his voice so as not to wake the whole family. “It’s seven o’clock in the morning.”

“I waited as long as I could, Sleeping Beauty.”

“You know that’s not what I’m talking about. I’ve been home less than twenty-four hours. There should be no reason why I have to head back up there now. I’ll see McBride and Emerson on Monday.” He blew out a disgusted breath, plotting his investment partner’s dismemberment. “You can handle this, Dennis. You know that.”

Dennis Wagner, whom Cody had known from the old days when they’d both worked for an investment firm in New York, wasn’t easily intimidated. He laughed, and Cody could picture him in his Houston study, feet propped up on the corner of his desk, which was always annoyingly neat. “I know that. You know that. I think even Emerson knows that. It’s McBride who’s getting antsy. He’s not much of a gambler, you know, and if he pulls out of this deal, he may take Emerson with him.”

Seated at his own desk, Cody set the phone receiver down on the blotter, trying to get his irritation under control. He didn’t want to get on another plane. He didn’t want to go to Dennis’s office in Houston. And right now he didn’t want to spend any more time with their two top clients, McBride and Emerson, who were starting to behave like nervous old women over this deal. He wanted to stay here, at Luna D’Oro. For a variety of reasons. But it wouldn’t help matters to take his frustration out on Dennis.

After a long moment he picked up the receiver again. In a curt, crisp tone he said, “There’s nothing for McBride to be nervous about. He’s going to make a heck of a lot of money on this. We all are.”

“But not without a little sacrifice on our parts. I know you’ve been working hard for a month to put your end of it together. But we can’t let it slip through fingers at the last minute just because we’re not willing to do a little baby-sitting until Monday. Hell, my wife has tickets to the symphony this evening and thinks this is just my way of getting out of it.” Dennis’s voice went lower, as though confessing an irritating truth. “The fact is, while both Emerson and McBride like my track record in this sort of risky venture, they trust you completely. You can offset any objections they come up with. Stay here at my place this weekend. By Monday afternoon it will be a done deal and everyone will be happy.”

“I don’t want to be gone from here all weekend.”

“It wouldn’t be the first time.”

“I know that,” Cody snarled. “But Sarah’s been a holy terror lately—” He stopped, not wanting to share personal problems with the man, no matter how close they’d become recently.

“You said it yourself, Cody. It’s a heck of a lot of money.
